Jan 30, 2012 I have over 10gb of Ableton Live Packs that are just chilling on my desktop that won't install due to the above reasons, as well as Live Packs from loopmasters that I actually purchased. This is pretty frustrating seeing how the Ableton website tells you nothing about installing Live Packs this way. Where to download ableton packs.

Max for Live Essentials includes 16 Instruments, 10 audio effects, and 8 MIDI effects. The Pack also features demo Live Sets that showcase the new Max for Live Synths and Drum Synths, as well as Instrument, Audio and MIDI Effect Racks. The Max for Live Essentials Pack includes:
Synthesizers
BASS: a monophonic virtual analog synthesizer that provides the entire palette of bass sounds in one device – from classically deep and clean to heavily distorted, rumbling tones.
POLI: a virtual analog synth designed to for playing classic polyphonic chords and phrases. Its vintage character comes from de-tunable oscillators, a powerful modulation section and a built-in chorus.
MULTI: a highly versatile and fun multimode synthesizer which combines six synth engines in a single device. Designed for intuitive sound creation, Multi’s parameter controls change according to the selected mode, while the ‘Random’ control lets you discover inspiring, unforeseen sounds.
Drum Synths: 13 custom-created synthesizers for drum and percussion sounds, with velocity control over just about every parameter. Try them for leads and basses too.
Audio Effects
Convolution Reverb: a sample-based reverb suite with hundreds of impulse responses from real-world spaces and world-class hardware. Featuring two devices; Convolution Reverb and Convolution Reverb Pro with added controls, plus a utility for creating your own reverb spaces.
Buffer Shuffler 2.0: an improved version of Live 8’s Buffer Shuffler, with new effects for sequencing (including stutter, gate, pitch, frequency shift, amp, and pan), plus a redesigned interface with improved layout and pattern storage. New options for “dice” modes let you precisely fine tune how sequences change over time.
Pitch Drop: recreates the sound of a vinyl record slowing down after the turntable's motor is stopped. This results in the effect of the sound being pitched down.
MIDI Effects
Arp: an advanced pattern-based MIDI Arpeggiator. It can sort, repeat and transpose incoming MIDI notes in various ways, while controlling a number of other parameters such as note length, velocity and more.
MonoSequencer: sequence a melody according to a flexible grid, with separate dedicated sequencers for note, velocity, octave, duration, and note repeats. Notes can be locked to key and scale, and each sequence comes with an intelligent randomizer. Sequences can be synched with Live, or trigger via MIDI input.
Instant Haus: a beat generator optimized for house music or broken beats and comes with a large variety of patterns for both styles.
NoteEcho: a MIDI echo with a number of unique features.
Control Devices
Highly useful tools for deep control over your Live Sets and sounds.
MAP8: a utility macro device that's particularly useful with Push and other eight-knob controllers.
LFO: a Max for Live device that uses an LFO (low frequency oscillator) to modulate a single parameter in your Live Set. There’s also A MIDI version of the LFO.
Djay software for pc. MultiMap: a control Device that allows you to map up to eight parameters anywhere in your Live set.
XYPad https://skyeysydney.weebly.com/zulu-professional-dj-software-download.html. : lets you control two Live parameters with an XY pad.
Envelope: a Max for Live device that uses an envelope function generator to modulate a single parameter in your Live Set.
Envelope Follower: a Max for Live device that tracks the changes in volume of an incoming audio signal and uses this information to modulate a mapped parameter.

PROBLEM:So..I just got Ableton Live 8 about 2 weeks ago, and am just getting around to using it now. I downloaded tons of Artist Live Packs from the Ableton website in hopes of getting a lot more sounds/effects I can use when creating some music. I also purchased some Live Packs from http://www.loopmasters.com. All files are .alp format. This is what I do:
1. Either double click the file on my desktop and Ableton automatically opens and attempts to install. OR I go to file/install livepack within Ableton while it is already open.
2. I choose the live pack I want to install.
3. It does NOT automatically install it, instead it asks for me to pick a location? So I pick a random location such as desktop or a NEW FOLDER called Live Packs within Ableton Library.
4. 'The Live Pack 'blahblahblahblah' contains a Project and cannot be installed inside another Project' <---this is what happens if I try to install it within a NEW folder within the Ableton Library.
If I choose the desktop, it installs on the desktop..but then I cannot find any of the files ANYWHERE within Ableton.

I just want these things installed, and I want all the files/sounds/effects in my library and available to use when creating new music! So far..no damn luck. Nothing. I have over 10gb of Ableton Live Packs that are just chilling on my desktop that won't install due to the above reasons, as well as Live Packs from loopmasters that I actually purchased. This is pretty frustrating seeing how the Ableton website tells you nothing about installing Live Packs this way. They only give you the 'automated' version which only works for a FEW Live Packs.

SOLUTION:
I figured out how to solve this problem, and it worked with all 18 live-packs I was trying to install.
1. Save the .alp file (live-pack) you are wishing to install, onto your desktop.

2. Create a separate folder (a blank NEW folder) anywhere on your computer (Desktop works for me) called Ableton Live Packs or something that is easy to find/navigate to.
3. Double-click on the .alp file you saved onto your desktop. Live will boot up and ask where you would like to install the project folder.
4. Select the NEW folder called 'Ableton Live Packs' or similar that you created on your desktop.
5. The .alp/live pack will now be saved in that location.
6. Go into the Ableton FILE BROWSER (usually the 2nd file browser on the left hand side of Live screen), and search for that folder called 'Ableton Live Packs' on your desktop.

8. Click EXPORT on the bottom of the Manage Project screen which is to the right of Live..
9. DONE! All the files/sounds/wavs/loops..EVERYTHING that was in that project is now found within your library.
Hope this helps anyone out that needs to install a live-pack that includes a project. I used this method for 18 live-packs now and it worked for every single one of them.
